Nepal, a tiny Himalayan country, is considered one of the most vulnerable nations to disaster. The entire country lies in a zone that is prone to high seismic activity. Earthquakes, floods, landslides, storms, hailstones, avalanches, fire hazards and epidemics are common natural disasters that expose Nepal to a high degree of risk. Besides the threat of these natural calamities, climate change is another factor that creates a significantly profound challenge to the environment. Over the past decade or so, several initiatives have been taken by international and regional agencies to support the national effort to protect and prepare Nepal for these challenges. However, a lot more still needs to be done to make Nepal a disaster resilient country. To complement international frameworks and to strengthen actions that reduce climate change risks, a group of experts in related subjects from different walks of life decided to establish a nongovernmental organization to meet these challenges. The main objective of this organization is to support Nepalís efforts to build disaster risk resilienceóboth present and future. Since its establishment in 2011, the NGOís mission has been to mainstream disaster reduction and climate change adaptation in country development strategies in order to minimize vulnerabilities to natural hazards.
